It was Sunday, April 28, 1974, and I, along with over 100,000 others, marched on 5th Avenue in New York chanting “1,2,3,4 open up the iron door 5,6,7,8 let my people emigrate.” We marched for the freedom of Soviet Jewry. I was 14 years old and it was the first step in what was to become a lifetime of working on behalf of the Jewish people.

For many years, our ketubah (Jewish marriage contract) – which includes an extensive list of the values Edna and I agreed to practice in our new home together -- served as an ethical roadmap for our lives. But as Edna and I celebrated our 25th anniversary a couple of years ago we thought that updating it with an Ethical Will -- a non-binding document for the purpose of passing values, wisdom, stories, wishes, feelings, advice or important information to our three children -- would be important.

Have you ever seen a glass blower at work? She usually holds a long iron pole, with a red hot lump at the end, alternately rolling, shaping and gently blowing into the pole to create something beautiful. It’s sweaty work, requiring a deft balance between strength and subtlety, pressure and ease.
