Foundation Announces New Trustees

The Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford Board of Trustees has announced the election of three new trustees—Brian S. Fierston, Jill J. Hutensky and Melvin A. Simon.

rian S. Fierston, CFP, is Vice President of Fierston Financial Group, Inc.  Brian joined Fierston Financial Group in 1991 after working at both Connecticut National Bank and Shawmut Bank in credit analysis.  Brian manages client relationships, creates securities portfolios, researches portfolio managers, is in charge of bond trading, and also manages the technology needs of the firm.

He earned his B.S. in Finance & Investments from Babson College.  Brian is an active member of the community and volunteers his time at many organizations.  In addition to chairing the Investment Committee at the Jewish Community Foundation, he is Chair of the Investment Committee and an active member of the Board of Trustees at Watkinson School. 


Jill J. Hutensky
spent 15 years with United Technologies Corporation in a variety of roles, from Sales and Marketing, to Operations, Communications and Corporate Responsibility, where she most recently managed the Corporation's $5M charitable giving program.  She is currently serving on the Foundation's Grants Committee, the Board of Overseers of the Bushnell Center for Performing Arts, and the Board of The Center for Children's Advocacy where she is the Treasurer.  She has been active in the community for more than 20 years in many organizations including The Jewish Federation if Greater Hartford, the Greater Hartford Arts Council, and The United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut.

She holds a Masters in Public and Private Management from the Yale School of Management and a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University.


Melvin A. Simon graduated from Yeshiva University’s Benjamin Cardozo School of Law (J.D., cum laude) and since 1998, has been a partner at the law firm of Cohn, Birnbaum and Shea, PC where he specializes in Commercial Litigation representing financial institutions in disputes involving Cyber Fraud, Commercial Paper and Negotiable Instruments and Credit Compliance, Real Estate Concerns in Breach of Contract, Environmental, Construction and Regulatory issues and Employers of all sizes in Employment Relations.

Mel is an active member of the community and volunteers his time at many organizations.  Among the organizations in which he has played a leadership role are the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford – where he served on the board from 1995, and from 2002 on its Executive Committee, through 2007; the Mandell Jewish Community Center, where Mel served on its Board of Directors since 1993; its Executive Committee since 1997 and was honored to be its President from 2005 through 2007 and Chairman of the Board from 2007 to 2009.  He also served as the President of the Jewish Teen Learning Connection the Jewish Community High School formerly known as Yachad from 2009 through 2012.

The Foundation is grateful to departing Board members, Gideon Rutenberg and Thomas Divine for their many years of service, dedication and commitment.
